Understanding your skin undertone is half the battle when you are choosing your makeup. But knowing how it helps you choose the right color is a whole other thing. Follow along as I give you 3 easy tips to help you understand skin undertones for makeup and help choose the right makeup color for you.
If you don’t even know what your undertone is, read this blog that explains how to figure out your skin tone.
Skin Undertones for Makeup: Foundation
When you are choosing a foundation PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make sure you get one that matches your complexion and your undertone. Matching your complexion is rather easy, (complexion is basically how light or dark you are), but matching your undertone is what makes or breaks your decision.
If your foundation makes you look ashy, dull, or very red, then 9 times outta 10, your foundation is too cool and you need a foundation with more warmth to it.
If your foundation makes you look too yellow then most likely your foundation is too warm and you need a cooler foundation.
Skin Undertones for Makeup: Eye Shadows
Here, you want to match your facial undertones with the undertones of your eye shadow. Generally speaking if you have warm undertones, you want to wear warm tone eye shadows. If you have cool undertones, you want to wear eye shadows with cool undertones.
Skin Undertones for Makeup: Blush & Lipstick
This is where the fun happens. When you are doing your pops of color (i.e. blush and lips) you want to go with the opposite undertones. This will be more flattering. If you wear blush that has the matching undertones you might find that it’s not really doing any thing for you. And as for the lips – you can do pretty much anything you want, and it will most likely look good. Except for when you are wearing red.
Generally speaking, if you have warm undertones, wear blush and red lipstick that has cool undertones. If you have cool undertones, wear blush and red lipsticks that have warm undertones.
