Primers – Are they worth it?
I get asked this question all the time. In a nutshell – yes. There are many types of primers, but they are all not always necessary. Primers for your face, primers for your eyes, and primers even for your lips. I will give you a quick run down of primers so then you can decide 1) if you even need it and 2) which type you should try.
Face Primer
These are the most popular. These are designed to smooth the surface of your skin to help your foundation apply well, skin look smooth, and foundation last longer. If you wear makeup daily or need it to stay all day (8+ hours) for special occasions, this is a good investment. If you are not the best with your skin care you can get primers that help with blemish control, large pores, and oily skin, to name a few. If you are treating these concerns with your skin care routine, a basic face primer is fine for you. Smashbox is one of my favorite brands for this.
Eye Primer
These are great if you have oily eyelids, hooded eyelids, or lids that have a tendency to have eye shadow crease. Eye primer will help your eye shadow appear more pigmented, blend better, last longer, and prevent from creasing. One of my favorites is MAC paintpot, in Painterly.
Lip Primer
This is good if you find your lipstick seems to wear off rather quickly. Lip primer dulls the moisture of your lips and makes your lips slightly tacky, so that your lip product can adhere to your lips better. If your lips are pigmented naturally, this will help you get a truer color of the lip product. This is not needed if you wear liquid lipstick or matte lipstick. If your lips are prone to being dry or chapped, (like me) this may not be a good idea for you on a regular basis. One of my favorites is Lip Insurance by Too Faced.
So, what do you think?
Do you have any more questions about primers? Do you have a favorite that I didn’t mention? I would love to hear from you. 🙂
